Izzy is the Star {Auburn Family Photography}

Loved spending time with these friends the other day!  They are easygoing and we did a lot of laughing.  Families that mess around with and adore each other are my favorites to photograph.  AND there was a new star this year, little Izzy,  who is a true Super Baby!

Cindy and Her Guys {Fall Mini Session}

Cindy is my sweet friend who's shared with me a lot of faith and humor filled mom wisdom through the years as she's a little further down the road of parenting than I am. It was so much fun taking portraits of her family the other evening. You can tell they have a good time together.  I know my friend loves to decorate beautiful mantels every season and I couldn't help but think as I was working on these, how well a framed print or two would fit on it.

Jeanna, Jason and the Boys {Fall Mini Session}

What a difference  a year makes! Last summer when we did their mini session little Lincoln was a man on the run and I remember us all laughing and chasing him for most of our time together.  That's how the little ones roll but this year he was chatting with me and when he smiled it just lit up his whole face. Luke has always been such a kind, smart and engaging boy and now he's getting tall!  Lots of love in this family.

Micah and Tia and Their Sweetie Girls {Fall Mini Session}

Big shout out to this wonderful family who showed up ready to jump in with me, despite yucky traffic on the way in and them confessing that they are not great with pictures (ummmm, okay, whatever...we ALL feel like that!). The most important thing for a session is to connect and have fun and they did and we did and I'm loving these pictures. My hope is that these portraits will always remind them of the love that they share and the blessing they live in. (Plus, these cutie pie girls were rocking their own styles and I love that!!)

Eric and His Girls {Fall Mini Session}

Loved spending time with this fun family again for a fall mini. It was fun hearing from Amorin about what she's loving in school and Lochlan is pure spunkiness.  We had beautiful evening sunshine and a lot of fun together.

Shannon, John and Their Girls in the Sunshine {Auburn Family Photography}

Photography has given me some great friendships and I am deeply thankful for the wonderful people who are in my life because of it!  Shannon's friendship is one such gift.  I admire her eye for light and relationships and was so blessed to have her do a mother daughter session for me this summer. What a treat it was to do a session with her family.

After a day of clouds we were about to throw in the towel on our golden light session plans and at the last second decided to go for it anyways. Were we ever glad we did! The light was amazing and the girls are so lovely and charming. I had such fun documenting the love between them, so FUN!

In Front of the Camera {Auburn Family Photography}

None of us want to be absent from the family pictures because we were behind the camera all the time. Whether it's an iphone selfie with the kiddos or handing off the big camera to get in a shot, it's so important. It was an extra special treat for me to photograph Prita and her family as Prita is a photographer herself.... Junebug Photography (check her out!)  It was fun to see how much her sweet girls look like her and to document the love that they all share. We ended up with gorgeous light (nothing like another photographer to enthuse about great light with me!) and  I so enjoyed our evening together!

Together {Golden Light Mini Session}

Just the day before I did their mini session I was rummaging through my desk and came across a card that Ada had written me after taking one of my classes this spring. It was one of those cards that made my day and I tucked it away to read again (and maybe again!) because it was so encouraging. I loved meeting up with their family. The colors were so beautiful and it was fun to chat about their summer and plans for the fall.

Last Bit of Light {Golden Light Mini Session}

One of the things I love about golden light is how quickly it changes as the evening goes on. Weston and Angela and their cute kiddos were my last mini session and I knew it would be a fun session because of how much I enjoyed photographing their family last year.  So warm and engaging and the littles were amazing! I had to laugh at one point when my memory card was almost full and Weston sailed over to my camera bag, dug around for me and handed me a new memory card so we didn't miss a beat with the kiddos.  You can tell he is very aware of the dynamic as his beautiful wife, Angela is the talented photographer at This Little Pic Photography.

Getting in the Pictures {Golden Light Mini Session}

I feel so lucky that so many wonderful people take my classes and then I feel very thankful when they have me take some pictures of their families! Sara is a great photographer and I've so enjoyed seeing her pictures on Facebook as she documents her family's life.  One of the things I preach hard is for the photographer to get in pictures too, whether it's the day to day snapshots or family portraits.  What a treat it was to capture the fun and connection that this beautiful family has.

Ten Years and a Little More Crazy {Golden Light Mini}

For their family pictures this year, Carmen chose some beautiful colors...the ones they used in their wedding ten years ago.  Things are busier and crazier now than they were ten years ago! Celebrating 10 years of marriage and family is a special thing.  Afterwards they went to the spray park to cool down and splashed around in their dress clothes...they know how to have a good time!

Sunshine Girls {Golden Light Mini Session}

I was so happy to photograph this beautiful family again! They were the first on my night of August mini sessions and these sunshine girls and their fun parents made it a piece of cake. The warm sunshine was a beautiful highlight for the love the clearly have for each other.

Happy Together {Auburn Family Photography}

My wonderful friends, Kaia and Jessa, gave the gift of family pictures last Christmas. It was so fun to do part one with them and capture some great smiles from their awesome family.  The boys rocked their pictures and were happy to hear from me that kids who do great at photo sessions get to have almost unlimited ice cream...on their parents' watch.

Plenty of personality.

What a treat it was to spend the evening with this family!  Jacquelyn's kids:  Gracie, Ricky and Spencer, are off the charts in the personality department.  She's shared with me how deeply she adores her parents, Rick and Chris, and how they are incredible grandparents.  And when the mama suggests getting in the river for a little waterfight at the end, I know it's been a great night!

Dan, Angela, Ellia and Eli in the Golden Light {Auburn Family Photography}

These are our dear friends and  not only did I love photographing them and hanging out during my mini session with their family trying to make the kids laugh,  but as I was editing them, I found myself alternating between grinning and tearing up!  Dan and Angela are loving, faithful, solid, generous (and terribly funny!!) people. We love any excuse to hang out with them and are so grateful for their family.

Growing Up {Golden Light Mini Session}

What a joy it is for me to photograph families as they grow.  I love seeing these friends whenever they are ready for updates. The boys are similar in age to my middles, and just like mine they are so different and so the same and magnetic towards each other.  Jen told me that they are both cuddlers too, which does a mom's heart well!  A golden light mini session was fast and easy!

Getting Ready {Auburn Maternity Photography}

What a treat it was to spend an evening with Rachel, Dan, and Scotty before their little baby arrives in a few weeks. Rachel's dad and brother were also in town and we popped them in a few pictures too.  Rachel is one gorgeous mama and the way Dan made her laugh so easily was fun to watch. Scott is such a sweetheart too. When I asked him what he wanted to teach his brother he told me he'd teach him to be kind. Sounds like he's the best big brother already!  Sunshine, our local river and a beautiful family...love, love, love!

My Nieces in the Golden Hour

Last weekend when we were up visiting in Vancouver, I ran my cute nieces to the park for a sisters session. We needed some birthday pictures for each and I really just wanted to photograph their awesome little selves in the evening sun.  Messy hair, tattoos, dirty feet along with swirly dresses, sparkly eyes and happy smiles.  We love The Cousins!

Dennis and Lillian's Family {Maple Valley Family Photography}

What a blessing it was to photograph this wonderful family.  They literally came in from around the world for this time and the smiles tell the story of how fun they were together. The smiles also tell the story of genetics....lots of family resemblance going on here!  We started pretty quickly since we had sunshine but big black clouds were rolling in, and by the time I was driving in my car home, it began to pour...love it when we are lucky like that! Big thanks to Joy who organized us all.  I loved seeing Kyle and Cathryn so grown up since Cathryn's newborn pictures!

My Beautiful Girl is Twelve

I had a lot of dolls when I was a girl. I loved dressing them in clothes my mum made and it was so fun to actually have real baby diapers to use, and a bottle that  looked like the baby was drinking the milk. I carted them around in the doll pram and carried them with me. I imagined one day being a mom to real babies.

For the last few days, Ruby and I have been talking about the days before she was born, when I was on absolute bed rest, trying to make it to 37 weeks so I could have a homebirth.  I showed her the first picture I have of me holding her, where she was probably seconds old and I was crying (big, weepy, messy crying). Ruby laughed and said, "You must have been crying because you were so glad the pain was over." I told her that wasn't it at all.  As long as I live, I'll never forget being overwhelmed by that tidal wave of crazy love that crashed over on me as I held those six pounds and eight ounces of  baby girl that I'd waited for my whole life.

And now for twelve years, she's been mine, and I still and always will love her with all my heart.  I can see her beautiful long fingers that play the trumpet and remember when they were chubby and clutching her bunny.  I love her big, unreserved smile which used to be filled with baby teeth.  I remember all the sweetness of her being little but I'm so very proud of the young woman she's growing to be. I'm thankful that not only have I had the blessing of being her mom when she was small but now I get to watch her grow right up to be a woman.

She's outgoing and vibrant. She's clever and creative. She's friendly and inclusive. She's loving and filled with faith. She's funny and delightful. She's our treasure and we will always, always be grateful that God gave her to us.

We took a few portraits the other day after dinner.  I see some lingering reminders of her as a little girl and glimpses of the young woman she'll be. But I'm glad that I get to watch her now be twelve years old. It's a gift to be her mama.

Happy birthday, Ruby.
