I have always liked to check things off my to-do list. Laundry. Check! Kitchen clean. Check! Kids' hair cut. Check! Phone calls made. Check! Kiss my husband. Check! Just joking on that last one :) . Seriously though, I have always felt so much better when I have completed my tasks and then allow myself time to relax and do nothing. There is definitely a good side to this. Things get done. There is order and routine. There is definitely a bad side to this too. Sometimes I don't relax and do nothing. Particularly these days of four little kiddos, there seems to always be something to do and the time to hang out definitely dwindles. So I am working on simplifying, doing the things that fill my tank and weeding out what doesn't. I know that there is a part of me which will never be eating bonbons on the couch with toys bombed to the four corners. However, I am trying to remember to stop and enjoy things, even when I haven't completed my "list".
This was one such day. It was just before Christmas. I was swimming in tasks like most of you were and trying to keep the kids busy with a minimal mess (oxymoron indeed). Ruby wanted to have a party with the boys. So I laid down my laundry basket and dug in the pantry. With instructions to the kids to get in costumes, I rummaged through the pantry and came up with Trader Joe's peanut butter crackers, craisins, and boterkoek scraps from the Christmas cookies we had brought to our neighbours. The queen, the lady bug, and the giraffe started to party. I grabbed my camera.
The giraffe enjoyed the fine dining.
They used my special tea set which my Oma and Opa gave me when I was four. I used to just keep it on a shelf. Now we play with it all the time. Tymen broke a cup accidently this day...and that's okay...because we are using and enjoying it.
Quite frankly, I don't know what I missed off my list of tasks this day, but what I do know is that I am glad I paused.
Cheers! To the best queen, lady bug and giraffe I know! Spending time with you is my most important thing to do.
